Eligibility for Free Kinder in 2025

The Victorian Government provides funding to support children to access a high quality kindergarten program in the two years before they start school. This helps to ensure all Victorian children get the best start in life.
In line with the Victorian Government's requirements for Free Kinder, each child may attend one year of 3 year old kindergarten, followed by one year of 4 year old kindergarten.
Your child can only attend a funded kindergarten program at one service at any one time, and children are only able to access one year in a 3 year old kinder program and one year in a 4 year old kinder program.
If you are concerned about your child's readiness for kindergarten or school, or they are in the younger age group of being born in January-April, we encourage you to call the kinder and have a conversation with one of our teachers about the best time to start your child at 3 year old kinder.

3 Year Old Kindergarten Readiness Checklist
When to Start Kindergarten in Victoria

You can start children in a kinder program when they are 3 years old.
If your child’s birthday falls between 1 January and 30 April, you will need to work out
the year they will start school to work out which years they will attend kinder.
Families with children born between January and April can choose which year to start
Three-Year-Old Kindergarten. These children can start in the same year they turn 3, or
in the year they turn 4 years of age.

Due to staffing requirements, some services may ask that children start attending
kinder only after their third birthday. This may mean that some children may not start
attending their kinder program until part-way into Term 1.

When your child starts at kindergarten directly relates to the age they will start at
primary school. When enrolling at Three-Year-Old Kindergarten, we encourage families to plan ahead and consider the age they would like their child to start at school.

If your child will turn 6 in late December (between the last day of the school year and
31 December), they can attend Four-Year-Old Kindergarten in that year and attend
school the following year.

If you have concerns about the best time for your child to start Kindergarten or would
like to discuss this information with an educator at Croydon North Kindergarten please give us a call on 9726 9246

The law in Victoria states that children must attend school from the age of 6. To enrol
in government school, a child must turn 5 before 30 April of the year they start school.

*Due to ratio requirements children cannot commence at Croydon North Kinder until the day they turn 3years of age. This means that if your child’s birthday falls between 1 January and 30 April they cannot commence until after their birthday.

If your child has a DOB between 1 Jan to 30 April it is important to think purposefully about this prior to enrolment and make an informed decision about when to start kinder.
